WISDOM

Out of the Heart, Through the Mouth: The Fruit of Wisdom

In all our pursuits, the most essential thing we must acquire is wisdom. It is the gatekeeper to everything else—understanding, discernment, excellence, and life itself.

Solomon exemplified this truth. When given the opportunity to ask God for anything, he asked for a wise and understanding heart. This pleased God, and He granted Solomon wisdom beyond anyone who had ever lived.

1 Kings 3:1–15
Solomon asked for wisdom, and God gave him wisdom and understanding beyond measure.

Proverbs 4:7
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”

Ecclesiastes 7:12

“For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, but the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.”

Wisdom brings life, protection, and profit. Solomon had the wisdom to ask for more wisdom—and was richly rewarded.

Proverbs 3:13–18

“Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding. For the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold.”

What Is Wisdom?

Biblically, the word wisdom is used to describe skill, discernment, and insight, which includes:

  • Excellence in workmanship, skill in war, administration, and craftsmanship
    (Exodus 28:3; 31:6; 35:26)
  • Shrewdness and prudence in religious and ethical affairs
  • Strategic and profitable decision-making

Wisdom is a spirit, hence a spiritual and moral conduit—a divine influence that enables us to live righteously, profitably, and abundantly.

Jesus: The Wisdom of God

Jesus is the embodiment of divine wisdom. Without Him, we have no life.

1 Corinthians 1:30
“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”

1 Corinthians 2:6–16
We speak wisdom among the mature—wisdom revealed by the Spirit, not understood by the natural man.

The Source and Levels of Wisdom

Wisdom comes from God and is freely given to those who seek Him. Its foundation is the fear of the Lord—a reverent love and obedience to God.

Proverbs 2:6
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Proverbs 1:7
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

James 1:5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

There are incremental levels to wisdom:

  • Beginning: The fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10)
  • Asking: Like Solomon did (James 1:5)
  • Growing: As Jesus did (Luke 2:52)

Wisdom Resides in the Heart

Proverbs 2:10
“When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul,”

Proverbs 14:33
“Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, but what is in the heart of fools is made known.”

1 Kings 10:24
“Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.”

Proverbs 4:23
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

The Heart: Gatekeeper of the Mouth

Wisdom profoundly influences speech, because our words are a direct reflection of what resides in the heart—the seat of wisdom or folly. Scripture consistently shows that the mouth is an outlet, expressing either life or death, depending on the kind of wisdom that governs the heart. The mouth reveals the wisdom or perversity within the heart, distinguishing the good man from the wicked.

Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Luke 6:45
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good... For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

Luke 21:15
“For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.”

Proverbs 6:12
“A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth;”

Proverbs 6:14
“Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually, he sows discord.

The Dichotomy of Wisdom: Heavenly vs. Demonic

Scripture reveals that not all wisdom is from God. There is a clear contrast between heavenly wisdom and demonic wisdom, and this distinction is crucial because it determines the fruit of our lives and the nature of our speech.

James 3:13–18
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.
But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.
For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

🔹 Heavenly Wisdom

  • Originates from God
  • Pure, peaceable, gentle
  • Open to reason
  • Full of mercy and good fruits
  • Impartial and sincere
  • Produces righteousness and peace

🔸 Demonic Wisdom

  • Earthly, sensual, demonic in nature
  • Rooted in envy, pride, and selfish ambition
  • Leads to confusion, division, and evil
  • Distorts truth and promotes strife

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are the source of all wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Your Word declares that wisdom is the principal thing, and in all our getting, we must get understanding (Proverbs 4:7). So today, I come before You humbly, asking for Your wisdom, fill my heart with wisdom. Lord, I renounce every form of earthly, sensual, and demonic wisdom—wisdom leading to envy, pride, and selfish ambition. I reject confusion, strife, and every evil work that flows from it (James 3:14–16). Cleanse my heart from all that is not of You.

Let the Spirit of wisdom lead me to be pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere (James 3:17). Let the fruit of righteousness be sown in peace through me, as I seek to walk in Your truth and make peace (James 3:18).

Father, fill my heart with Your wisdom, for Your Word says that when wisdom enters the heart, knowledge becomes pleasant to the soul (Proverbs 2:10). Guard my heart, for out of it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23).

And Lord, I ask as Jesus promised in Luke 21:15:

“Give me a mouth and wisdom which none of my adversaries will be able to contradict or resist.”

Let my speech be seasoned with grace and truth. May my tongue be a vessel of life, not death (Proverbs 18:21). Let the abundance of my heart bring forth good, and may my words reflect the treasure of Your Spirit within me (Luke 6:45).

I thank You, Lord, that in Christ Jesus I have received wisdom from God—righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30). Continue to grow me in wisdom and stature, just as Jesus grew (Luke 2:52).

In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.
